INTRODUCTION

World Environment Day, commemorated each year on 5 June, is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action.

ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

As our Earth is now facing the severe threat of Global warming, immediate steps have to be taken to protect the Earth. Global warming is caused by the emission of greenhouse gases. 72% of the totally emitted greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide (CO2), 18% Methane and 9% Nitrous oxide (NOx). Carbon dioxide emissions therefore are the most important cause of global warming.

Speaking on the occasion Hon’ Thiru B.V.Ramanaa, Minister for Environment Government of Tamilnadu shared that There is a need for  awakening the world over to have a clean and healthy environment. Environment is influenced by a variety of factors; the multiplicity of factors makes environmental management a complex issue. So each one should be responsible for the healthy and pure environment and respect the Mother Nature. Everyone should take it as their personal responsibility to safeguard the environment and brighten up our life and future generations.

Speaking on the occassion Mr.Janardhanam, Former President, SCI Tamil Nadu  remarked  Many people and governments are already working hard to cut greenhouse gases, and everyone can help. In addition to reducing the gases we emit to the atmosphere, we can also increase the amount of gases we take out of the atmosphere.  Plants and trees absorb CO2 as they grow, “sequestering” carbon naturally.  Increasing forestlands and making changes to the way we farm could increase the amount of carbon we’re storing.

Mr.A.J.Hariharan shared that the Go Green campaign focus mainly on youth as youth have to participate and youth needs to be sensitized and they have lot to contribute to the climate change issues and they can actively participate and sensure a safe tomorrow and a pleasant environment.Youth need to come fight against to stop Global warming for the better. ICWO is committed to initiate intervention wherever needed to stop global warming. The fight against global warming cannot be in isolation it needed collaboration effort and needed different stakeholders, corporates, NGOs, CBOs, along with general public to work towards in fighting against global Warming.

Ms. Esther MariaSelvam, Programme Manager, Action Aid India, Chennai Region shared that  in this Era of modernization things are getting more and more commercialized as well as privatized which will adversly affect the environment and its natural balance ,so what we can do is promoting sustainable agriculture in which the local community people can be involved thereby reducing the poverty and balancing  as well as improving the ecosystem. In this aspect we should make the people more aware and should practise sustainable agriculture for a green tomorrow.
